Gabion Basket Retaining Wall

Date published: 17 February, 2022

For recent changes to this guidance, please see the bottom of the page.

Gabion baskets are used to create a retaining structure designed to hold back embankments and prevent land slippage, or to stabilise slopes against erosion. They are large metal-mesh rectangular baskets which are carefully filled with stones once in position.

Any land is eligible.

Gabions can only be selected if used in conjunction with the IPA “new path” or “upgraded path” capital items, to support adjacent embankments or unstable ground close alongside the path.

Gabion baskets should be:

  • Based on a level, hard and firm ground.
  • Bedded on soil loosened and raked level, or a bed of raked sand.
  • Baskets filled with selected stone laid and built-up to avoid sagging or movement.
  • Crushed rock and fines rammed into cracks to firm-up the fill to level surfaces.
  • Landscaped into adjacent banking or path edges or verges using turf and spoil.
  • Soil brushed into stonework and seeded, to help stabilise and give a more natural look.

You can claim £100 per cubic metre.

The inspectors will check:

  • The location and extent of the work as is detailed in the contract schedule of works and contract map.
  • That the capital item requirements have been met as detailed above.
