Post and Rail Tree Guards

The aim of this item is to protect existing or newly-planted individual trees within ancient wood pasture from damage by livestock with post and rail fencing.

Any grassland with ancient wood pasture is eligible.

You must combine this capital item with the Ancient Wood Pasture management option.

You must mark the location(s) where you propose to protect individual trees on a map.

  • the post and rail guard must protect a veteran tree or a newly-planted individual tree from damage by livestock and deer
  • the guards must be at least 1.1 metres high
  • there must be at least three rails
  • rails must be at least 38x87 millimetres sawn timber
  • posts must be no more than 1.8 metres apart
  • all fencing materials must be new and treated

You can claim £7.00 per metre.

The inspectors will check:

  • the location and extent of the work
  • the post and rail guard protects the veteran tree or a newly-planted individual tree from damage by wild and domestic herbivores
  • the guards are at least 1.1 metres high
  • there are at least three-rails
  • rails are at least 38x87 millimetres sawn timber
  • posts are no more than 1.8 metres apart
  • all fencing materials is new and treated
