Beef Efficiency Scheme (BES) application deadline extension to 15 June
Application deadline extended.
Farmers now have until 15 June 2016 to apply for a share of up to £45 million support for the beef sector.
The new Beef Efficiency Scheme aims to improve the efficiency, sustainability and quality of the Scottish beef herd, helping to increase profitability and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said:
“The Scottish Government has earmarked up to £45 million for the Beef Efficiency Scheme, representing an unprecedented investment in the sector. The potential returns are significant, both for individuals producers and for beef farming as a whole.
“Signing up makes sound business sense - eligible producers will receive financial support for improving the quality of their herd to increase on-farm efficiency and maximise profits. The longer-term environmental benefits are also sizeable.
“That is why I want to give farmers and crofters as much time as possible to sign up. It is quick and easy to do, and I urge all beef producers to apply if they’ve not already done so. We will be closely monitoring the number of applications later in the year to see if further action is needed to increase participation.”
Jim McLaren, Chairman of Quality Meat Scotland (QMS, said: “The Beef Efficiency Scheme is set to deliver important benefits and has real potential to improve the financial performance of individual farm businesses and our national herd. The extended deadline for applications is a welcome opportunity to ensure all eligible farmers benefit from this initiative.”
NFUS Vice President Rob Livesey said, “At this busy time of year we welcome the extension. This will allow farmers who wish to be part of scheme some extra time to sign up.”
