Fence Removal

Date published: 30 March, 2015

The aim of this item is to benefit biodiversity by removing an existing stock or deer fence.

This item is only available where the applicant has provided clear justification that it is necessary in order to deliver a desired priority outcome and public benefit.

It can be used, for example where a small area has previously been fenced off but a better outcome for the habitat would be achieved if it was part of a larger grazing parcel, or if a previously stock excluded area has recovered sufficiently to now benefit from grazing, or where fence removal will remove the risk of bird collision within black grouse or capercaillie core areas.

This item is not available to fund the removal of old fencing which is being replaced with new fencing.

Any land that is either:

  • where the area to benefit is included in a management option, or
  • within a black grouse or capercaillie core area

with an existing stock or deer fence to be removed, is eligible.

You must show the location of the proposed fence to be removed on a map.

  • the existing fence must be completely dismantled and all materials must be removed from the site
  • you must maintain a diary

You can claim £2.50 per metre of fencing removed.

The inspectors will check:

  • the location and extent of the work
  • you have maintained a diary
  • the existing fence has been completely dismantled and all materials have been removed from the site
