The Code of Practice on Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture

What is the Code of Practice?

The Code of Practice is a guide to sustainable and regenerative farming. It can help you decide which actions and measures might work for you.

Why have we created it?

We want Scotland to be a global leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. New legal requirements mean a Code of Practice has been developed. It will create common standards of good practice to help make that happen

How did we create the Code of Practice?

The Code of Practice was written in collaboration with the agricultural industry.

Many farmers and crofters have already adopted sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. Many of these are included in the Code of Practice.

This is a preliminary version and we will continue to work with farmers and crofters to improve it. A final Code of Practice will be published in due course.

What is sustainable and regenerative agriculture?

Sustainable practice means managing your land in a way that minimises environmental damage.

Regenerative practice means managing land in a way that allows for the renewal of natural resources.

What are the benefits for farmers and crofters?

The Code of Practice includes practical suggestions that can be good for your business.

The actions in the Code of Practice can help you to:

  • make your farm of croft more efficient
  • boost profitability
  • find ways to reduce your impact on the climate
  • farm in a way that helps protect nature

Do I have to follow the Code?

No. The Code of Practice is a helpful guide that can give you practical ideas on how to approach farming or crofting. It is not a requirement and does not create any legal obligations.
