For recent changes to this guidance, please see the bottom of the page.

A well-placed picnic table allows for rest and refreshment at a pleasant site. The design should provide space for easy use by a person in a wheelchair at the end or at the side of the table. Selection of location should consider the views and setting, and be on an accessible level and firm site.

Any land is eligible, and the table should be close to and link directly to an existing path, the IPA “new path” or “upgraded path” capital items.

  • May be constructed from treated timber or recycled plastic, placed close to the path.
  • Seats and table top should be smooth, round-edged, and free draining, and fixed with counter-sunk galvanised, stainless-steel or brass screws or bolts.
  • Main leg(s) should be sturdy, min 100mmx100mm section if timber, and fixed firmly to the ground level either in a hole backfilled with well-rammed earth and stones, and/or concrete; or with timber or metal pins.
  • Height of the seat top should be 510mm above ground level.
  • Table top height should be 810mm above ground level.
  • Must be set on a firm level surface and surrounding, with clear and easy access from the path.
  • There must be no horizontal spars above ground between bench and table.
  • You must keep photographic evidence of the installation phase showing works below ground level.

You can claim £700 each.

The inspectors will check:

  • The location and extent of the work as is detailed in the contract schedule of works and contract map.
  • That the capital item requirements have been met as detailed above.
  • That photographic evidence has been provided as detailed above.
